Sports Culture in National Capital

Delhi, the capital of India, is home to some of the most popular stadiums in the country.These state of the art facilities serve as the venue for small and big sports events. It was because of Delhi's sporting prowess that Common Wealth Games 2010 was hosted across various stadiums of Delhi.

Many people come from different states from all over the country to learn and practise different games in these stadium. Many indoor as well as outdoor games can easily be played in these stadiums

Some of the famous stadiums of Delhi are:

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

Located on Lodi road,it is one of the most famous stadiums of the country. The stadium is named after the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. A wide array of sports events can be organised here. 130,000 people can easily be accommodated around.

Fun Fact : JLN Stadium is the headquarters of the Indian Olympic Association.

Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium
Badminton, gymnastics, volley ball,are some of the events that are help here every year. In Common Wealth Games 2010 all the gymnastics events were hosted here. Spread in an area of over 100 acres, the stadium was constructed in year 1982. It has a seating capacity of 25,000 persons. It is well equipped with various facilities such as lighting, audio,soundproof walls,fireproof facility,etc.

DDA Siri Fort Sports Complex
Another indoor stadium which hosts events in games like Squash, Badminton and Weightlifting. The stadiums also offer swimming pool, skating rinks, football field, hockey and cricket playing area.

Yamuna Sports Complex
Archery and table tennis events are hosted in Yamuna Sports complex. It is managed by the DDA and has a capacity of 5000 people.

Dr. Shyam Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Pool
People who love Aquatics and related event must head to this stadium. It has both swimming and diving pools.

Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium
Located in the heart if the city near India Gate is Major Dhyan Cand National Stadium. Named after famous Indian Hockey player Dhyan Chand, this stadium hosts many hockey events. The first Asian Games in 1951 were held here. It also used as a venue for marathons and rallies.

Talkatora Indoor Stadium
Basket Ball and Table tennis loving individuals should head to Willingdon Crescent Road where this stadium is. To your surprise youll eve find a section for archery. Apart from sports many music concerts, cultural programs, political seminars and quiz contests are also held.

Ambedkar Stadium
The stadium especially conceptualised keeping mind the interest in football of the people of the country. Stadium is developed to seat 20,000 people. Day-night football match are organised here.

Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium
Named after the emperor Feroz Shah Tughlaq, ruler of Delhi from 1351 to 1388, this stadium built in 1883 hosts cricket matches. Many international cricket matches have held here.
